Whatever Happened to Breast Washers?

Pictured here is an ad for a metallic-looking, retro-futuristic "breast washer," circa 1930's. Yes, they had these things back in the old days! So what the hell happened to them? Why did they disappear? Maybe women didn't take showers or baths as often due to their permed hairs or something and now they are obsolete since everyone takes at least two baths or showers a day.
